ARTDEJARDIN AT WINGWELL

 

 

 

 

‘ . . . . this is no ordinary garden.    Lulled by the village’s earthborn dry stone walls, I am startled by a deep coral-pink entrance pavilion and stridently architectural wall which seems to cut into the old farmhouse.   The 350-years’ old stone house is the backdrop to a sloping lawn, edged with silver drifts of drought-tolerant, aromatic plants, inspired by the Mediterranean. Originally designed as an imaginative playspace for the Dejardins’ young children,  the north lawn has rolling mounds, its soft green dunes succeeded by the serene contrast of a circular lily pool sitting snugly into the north-east boundary hedge of pleached hornbeam. The pool water is re-circulated via a rill, all along this east side of the house.'
